 2 Am inneren Tor, in Eisen schwer gefaßt ein kleines Wachhaus und der Fahnenmast.
By the inside steel gate, tightly locked a small guard shack and the flag pole. |
 3 Still liegt die Lagergasse unterm Wind, Weil alle Männer auf der Arbeit sind.
Still lies the camp lane under the wind, Because all the men have gone off to work. |
 4 Der Mann, der hier dieser Tafel weilt Schaut ob man ihn zur Arbeit eingeteilt.
The man who lingers with this sketchbook awaits to see if someone will assign him for work. |
 5 Und hat man sich vom Schmutz verfreit, Dann spielt man Karten in der freien Zeit.
And if one has rid himself of dirt, Then he plays cards during his free time. |
 6 Will man das nicht, so bleibt man still im Zelt und plaudert wohl von einer besseren Welt.
If one does not want that, he stays quietly in his tent And probably chats of a better world |
 7 Hat man nicht Wein und auch kein Bier dann spielt man lustig siebzehn-vier.
There is no wine and also no beer, So one plays hard at 17-4. (A card game like blackjack.) |
 8 Zur Arbeit sind sie alle raus, Es blieb ein Kranker und ein Hund zuhaus.
To work all have gone, a sick man and a dog remain at home. |
 9 Die Tür verschlossen – nun gehabt euch wohl ein Landser brennt sich Alkohol.
Behind closed doors - now you almost had it A soldier distills himself some alcohol. |
 10 Doch bei der Inspektion am gleichen Ort nahm leider der Amy hin mit fort.

 12 In der Kantine darf man nichts verlangen Denn meistens ist die Ware ausgegangen.

 13 Und hier sitzt einer Tag und Nacht Aufs Wohl der Kompanie bedacht.

 14 Fünf Zentimeter darf’s nur sein Und das bereitet manchem Pein.

 15 Und wie die Zelte sich am Weg hinschmiegen Am Ende sieht man das Theater liegen.

 16 Und bei Gebeten, Predigt und Gesang Sagen viele P.O.W.’s Gott Preis und Dank.

 17 Am Abend gehen sie ob Sohn oder Vater Hinein ins P.O.W. Theater.

 18 Im Kino ist es meistens nett Man sieht auch schöne Beine in Ballet.
